The Durbin Rocket, Durbin, West Virginia, disappearing in a tunnel of trees

The Durbin Rocket spent many years hauling logs out of the mountains along the East Fork near Durbin, West Virginia. Today the train continues to chug along the river, hauling passengers on a two-hour tour into the beautiful West Virginia woodland. Here the engine is seen leaving Durbin, through a tunnel of trees. The engine pushes the train outbound; pulls it back on the return trip. For more information see “We Have Our own Train.”

I love this photograph! It reminds me of the small town in which I grew up and the sound of the train whistle in the distance….
